Amyl and the Sniffers shake up Glasgow’s O2 Academy with poignant punk rock passion

IT wasn’t my typical Wednesday night, thrashing in a sea of punk fans belting out “Go F*** Yourself” as beer and god knows what else was being thrown into the air – but there I was.

My most recent gigs haven’t been quite as rambunctious but Amyl and the Sniffers proved why this certain type of genre is still needed and very much relevant today.

The Aussie pub punk rockers played an exhilarating set at Glasgow’s O2 Academy on Wednesday night as part of a tour of their latest album Cartoon Darkness.

Supported by an uprising Atlanta band called Upchuck, the night got off to a rather passionate start as the band let their anger over the morning’s US election results flow through their performance.

The lead singer KT gave a poignant speech before smashing through the five-piece band’s hits such as Freaky and Facecard.

This theme was very much carried on by the headliners as they made their way on stage with the screams of “F*** Trump” as they kicked off their first song ‘Doing In Me Head’.

In her signature hot pants, bleach blonde shaggy hair and a lime green halter neck top, Amy Taylor graced fans with her infamous tongue-out pose.

The Melbourne four-piece, formed in 2016, have now had three studio albums and they did not disappoint in honouring all of them.

They throttled through much-loved hits such as ‘Freaks to the Front’, ‘Some Mutts (Can’t Be Muzzled)’ and ‘Security’.

Frontwoman Taylor, 28, even swigged a pint of Buckfast – much to the Scots’ delight – as she aptly screamed the lyrics “Let me into your pub, I’m not that drunk”.

The band made sure to showcase their new album with new-found favourites such as Chewing Gum and Big Dreams before the hotly-anticipated performances of ‘Got You’ and ‘Tiny Bikini’.

Aussie Taylor took pauses between anthems to tell the crowd about her holiday to the Highlands before questioning “Why is it so dark so early here?”

The crowd erupted even more when the band battered through ‘Me and The Girls’ and ‘U Should Not Be Doing That’ before leaving the crowd for their encore with ‘Hertz’.

With only a three minute wait, they were back to finish things off by smashing through ‘Balaclava Lover Boogie’ and ‘GFY’.

Which takes me back to my initial statement – not my typical Wednesday night at all, but a fantastic one to say the least.
