There’s been a theory going around for ages about Breaking Bad being the prequel to The Walking Dead, and while this may seem strange and vague, at some point, it also makes some sense.
Both television franchises have been followed by fans for quite a long time, and they have seen some potential connection between them that traces back events from the zombie apocalypse series to the crime science fiction.
Aaron Paul Reads A Bizarre Breaking Bad/The Walking Dead Theory
In a Vanity Fair interview with Aaron Paul, the actor broke down Breaking Bad theories from fans, and one of those was the famous crossover with The Walking Dead. “Breaking Bad started in 2008 and ended in 2010. The outbreak in Walking Dead started sometime in 2010,” he read.
These dates are actually the show’s release dates which could serve as a plausible timeframe for the suggested theory. The general idea is that Walter White’s meth caused the outbreak and created the epic zombie apocalypse that viewers have seen in The Walking Dead. More clues were enumerated, fortifying the hypothesis that both series are connected.
In Walking Dead, they showed Walter’s meth in season two. In Fear the Walking Dead, we hear the Ballad of Heisenberg in a market.
It is oddly convincing by now that these were intentionally incorporated. In the second season of The Walking Dead, Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon was seen carrying a bag with a stash of drugs. There were a handful of blue crystals at the bottom, resembling the Blue Sky substance manufactured by Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.
The theory basically suggests that White is inadvertently responsible for the zombie epidemic because of the presence of the blue meth in The Walking Dead. Another interesting fact is that the drug was specifically created only for Vince Gilligan’s show, so for it to appear randomly in the horror series is already proving something.
With all this evidence, Paul seemed unimpressed with the theory. “Listen, man. Breaking Bad is based in reality, okay. Walking Dead is not. There’s no zombies,” he explained in the video. Unfortunately, there was never any confirmation from the producers if the two series are truly linked together.
What Truly Caused the Zombie Outbreak?
Throughout the comic saga of The Walking Dead, creator Robert Kirkman chose not to reveal the source of the virus and never came close to finding out where it originated. The AMC show also veered away from revealing too much information.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond was able to answer this age-long question. It finally provided fans with the fact that the virus came from a biomedical facility in France. It has been implied that the virus was born inside the laboratory and accidentally released, but Kirkman preferred to keep its origin tale a mystery.
Perhaps this is why many fans are still pushing for the Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead connection; there isn’t one confirmed source of the outbreak.
