Angus Gunn opens up on Portugal’s first goal as Scotland keeper offers explanation for not saving Bruno Fernandes effort

WE shot ourselves in the foot with our own Gunn.

That’s what it felt like when Portugal equalised in Lisbon.

And Scotland No1’s admits himself he should have kept out Bruno Fernandes’ strike from distance.

Angus Gunn was beaten far too easily for the leveller.

And it was heartbreaking given how many brilliant saves he made before Cristiano Ronaldo’s late winner.

Gunn said: “There were obviously moments in the game where I was there.

“The first one was coming through a lot of bodies, but I got there and was probably a little bit frustrated with that one.

“I take that on the chin.

“I think when you get that amount of contact on it, you’re obviously disappointed as a keeper.

“But it’s come through bodies.

“I feel like I did get a little bit of my hand to it so I will be disappointed with that.

“Obviously, I’ll analyse it with the coaches and come back stronger.

“There were definitely other moments in the game where I was happy with how I did.

“I thought we defended really well as a team.

“They’ve got some quality players and we limited them.

“We kept them down the sides. Unfortunately, in the end, the pressure told. We were disappointed that we didn’t hold on.”

Conceding yet another late goal to Ronaldo was also hard to take for goalie Gunn.

He added: “Obviously they were putting a lot of pressure on in the second half and maybe we opened up a little bit too much towards the end.

“We were obviously still in the game and wanted to win it as well.

“They created a little bit of space and got behind the back line, which maybe we should have prevented.

“I was surprised because we defended the crosses pretty well and we always seem to be there.

“I think there was a similar one late on that.

“Robbo came around to the back post and defended it.

“But I think maybe we were still pushing for the goal to win the game.

“We opened up a little bit too much and unfortunately you can’t give that man space in the box.

“We’ll analyse it next camp and hopefully be even stronger.”

Overall, Gunn insists Scotland deserved better as he added: “I thought we played really well.

“We were a bit frustrated that we didn’t pick something up. I think that shows good signs.

“I thought performance was there.

“Obviously we’re playing against a quality team and it’s frustrating in the end, which I think shows how well we played in the game.

“Even when they scored the second one, I think we still had a few more chances and we were still pushing towards the end. That was a positive sign. We didn’t go under.

“I think there was definitely positives to take from the Poland game the other night too.

“But I think tonight as well, obviously against a top team, we played really well.

“I think we’ve got to take the positives from this camp.

“Even though there have been two losses, I think there has been a lot of positive things that we can take.

“Hopefully we can go into the next camp and pick some points up.

“I think the manager said in there, keep your heads up, keep believing.

“The last few performances have actually been very positive.

“Even though we’ve not picked up any points, obviously in the Poland game, we probably dominated the second half and deserved something from that game.

“Then we come here to one of the best teams in Europe and put on a performance like that.

“We’ve got to take the positives from that.

“We’re trying to build, looking to the next World Cup qualifying campaign. If we can come here and put on performances like that, that will put us in good stead for that one coming up.”

Gunn reckons the performance also shows the players are right behind under pressure Clarke.

He added: “I think so, yes.

“I think obviously we come off the back of a disappointing Euros. And come into a new camp and we’ve changed formation.

“We’ve tried to do things a little bit differently, brought some new faces into the squad, which I think has helped energise us.

“And I think even though we’ve not picked up the results, the signs and the performances are definitely there.
