Auburn basketball rises into AP top 4, Bama drops to No. 8 following loss

(WHNT) — After the second week of college basketball, some new teams have made their way into the top 10 and some teams have fallen down after losing.

After defeating Oakland 78-57, the Kansas Jayhawks have held onto their lead at the top of the AP poll. The Jayhawks received 49 of the 61 first-place votes.

UConn moved up one spot and now sits at No. 2 and rounding out the top three, Gonzaga moved up one spot to No. 3.

The Auburn Tigers now sit at No. 4 following a 79-56 win against Kent State. The Tigers received three first-place votes going into week three.

The Tigers finished the game with a field goal percentage of 49.1. The team also made six of 24 attempted three-pointers and 17 of 22 free throws.

Forward Chaney Johnson played 29 minutes total, scoring 18 points and having five rebounds and four assists.

Forward Johni Broome tied Johnson for scoring points but had 12 rebounds and four assists.

The Tigers led the entire game not letting up, scoring 36 points in the first half and 43 points in the second.

Purdue made one of the largest jumps in the rankings after beating the formerly No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide 87-78 at home. Purdue jumped seven spots up to No. 6 following the win.

Alabama dropped six spots following the loss, now sitting at No. 8 in the rankings.

In total, the team made 28 of 63 field goals, nine of 29 three-pointers and 13 of 15 free throws. The Tide also had 22 fouls and eight turnovers in the game.

The SEC leds the way with seven ranked teams: No. 4 Auburn, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 20 Arkansas, No. 21 Florida and No. 23 Texas A&M.

The Big 12 has six teams in the top 25 rankings and the Big Ten has five. The Big East follows with four teams and the ACC has two teams and the West Coast Conference comes in with one team.

Alabama will go on to play No. 25 Illinois on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Auburn will play North Alabama Monday at 8 p.m.
