Auburn NFL roundup: Jamien Sherwood steps up for the Jets

In the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley limped off the field.

The NFL team announced the five-time Pro Bowler had a toe injury and was questionable to return to the game. Mosley did not return, and that elevated Jamien Sherwood’s role for the Jets.

The former Auburn safety turned NFL linebacker responded as New York defeated the Titans 24-17, with the Jets stopping Tennessee on downs at the New York 14-yard line with 17 seconds to play.

Sherwood made nine tackles for the Jets defense. His career high had been eight, reached in New York’s 17-3 victory over the New England Patriots in the final game of the 2023 season.

But Sherwood also made three tackles on special teams on Sunday.

He made one tackle for loss and broke up one pass, too.

Sherwood was among the 20 former Auburn players who got on the field on the second Sunday of the NFL’s 105th season.

Two other former Auburn players were involved in the New York-Tennessee game:

· Titans defensive tackle Marlon Davidson (Greenville) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Titans cornerback Roger McCreary (Williamson) made three tackles, recorded one tackle for loss and registered one quarterback hit.

In the other Sunday games:

Las Vegas Raiders 26, Baltimore Ravens 23

· Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson made four field goals and two extra points, including the tiebreaking kick in the closing seconds. Carlson connected on field goals of 53 yards with 9:19 left in the first half, 51 yards with 1:37 left in the first half, 25 yards with 9:21 left in the game and 38 yards with 27 seconds to play.

· Raiders tight end John Samuel Shenker is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Los Angeles Chargers 26, Carolina Panthers 3

· Derrick Brown is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Chargers long snapper Josh Harris handled the snaps for three punts, three extra points and two field goals.

· Eku Leota started at outside linebacker for the Panthers. Leota didn’t record any stats in his first NFL start.

· Panthers linebacker Chandler Wooten is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

New Orleans Saints 44, Dallas Cowboys 19

· Cowboys defensive end Carl Lawson is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20, Detroit Lions 16

· K.J. Britt (Oxford) started at linebacker for the Buccaneers. Britt made four tackles.

· Carlton Davis started at cornerback for the Lions. Davis made four tackles against Tampa Bay, which traded him to Detroit during the offseason. Davis played six seasons with the Buccaneers.

· Jamel Dean started at cornerback for the Buccaneers. Dean equaled his career high with 10 tackles and broke up a pass. Dean also made 10 tackles in a 16-13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 22, 2023, and in a 32-9 playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 15.

· Buccaneers running back D.J. Williams is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Green Bay Packers 16, Indianapolis Colts 10

· Colts cornerback Jaylin Simpson is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Braden Smith started at right tackle for the Colts.

· Malik Willis started at quarterback for the Packers. In the lineup for injured starter Jordan Love, Willis completed 12-of-14 passes for 122 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran six times for 41 yards. Willis’ 14-yard connection with wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks was the first touchdown pass of his NFL career.

· Packers defensive tackle Colby Wooden was designated as a game-day inactive.

Cleveland Browns 18, Jacksonville Jaguars 13

· Jaguars running back Tank Bigsby did not record any stats. Bigsby left the game in the first half because of a shoulder injury.

· Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery) made one tackle on special teams.

Seattle Seahawks 23, New England Patriots 20 (OT)

· Seahawks outside linebacker Derick Hall made two tackles and registered one quarterback hit. Hall was evaluated for a concussion in the second quarter but was cleared to return.

· Jonathan Jones started at cornerback for the Patriots. Jones tied for the team lead with eight tackles.

· Seattle cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett (Jackson) did not record any stats.

Washington Commanders 21, New York Giants 18

· Commanders cornerback Noah Igbinoghene (Hewitt-Trussville) made three tackles.

· Darius Slayton started at wide receiver for the Giants. Slayton had three receptions for 33 yards.

Arizona Cardinals 41, Los Angeles Rams 10

· Cardinals defensive tackle Angelo Blackson is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Cardinals inside linebacker Owen Pappoe made three tackles.

Pittsburgh Steelers 13, Denver Broncos 6

· Steelers defensive tackle Montravius Adams made two tackles.

· Bo Nix (Pinson Valley) started at quarterback for the Broncos. Nix completed 20-of-35 passes for 246 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions and ran four times for 25 yards.

· Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham dressed for the game but did not play.
