Fans may wish for Tom Cruise to make another Edge of Tomorrow film, but he also has many past projects that deserved a sequel but never got any, such as 1994’s Interview with the Vampire.
The movie was a box office success, although it was also pestered with controversy, particularly with Cruise’s casting. Still, many believe he performed well as Lestat and even the actor was frustrated that the project did not get a follow-up.
Why Tom Cruise’s Interview with the Vampire Never Got a Sequel
Actor Christian Slater, who portrayed Daniel Molloy in Interview with the Vampire, revealed that he and fellow star Tom Cruise were shocked that they never got the chance to make a sequel. He told ComicBook:
Tom Cruise and I were both surprised that Interview With a Vampire didn’t get a sequel. That would have been fun. I mean, he did bite me at the end of that thing.
With that cliffhanger ending, it would have been enough reason to get a second installment. In fact, the studio did attempt to make one but it never got off the ground. In 2002, they released Queen of the Damned, which was a mixed adaptation of the second and third novels. None of the original cast members returned, and it also flopped critically and commercially.
The reason for not reviving the franchise at the time remains unknown, although it could be perhaps due to the backlash that Cruise received after appearing as Lestat. Author Anne Rice reportedly did not like his casting and would have preferred his costar Brad Pitt for said role.
On another note, Cruise allegedly passed on to reprise his role due to schedule conflicts. Interview with the Vampire received a new treatment after AMC announced a television adaptation with an all-new cast. At this point, it seems unlikely that the movie will ever get a second installment.
Emily Blunt Wants an Edge of Tomorrow Sequel With Tom Cruise
While a sequel to Interview with the Vampire already looks like a shot in the dark, Cruise can still rally for a follow-up to Edge of Tomorrow. There is no update of a sequel being in production, and fans are clamoring for one.
Even Emily Blunt wished “there could be [a sequel]” and she “would love to make it a reality” during her interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast. She also encouraged her costar to make the wise decision of returning to his character in the sci-fi movie after witnessing how brilliant his performance was.
As the actress mentioned, Cruise might still be very busy prepping for his upcoming Mission: Impossible movie, and possibly Top Gun 3 if he manages to clear his schedule. Given the success of these two franchises, it seems clear why the actor hasn’t revisited the sci-fi action yet.
Interview with the Vampire and Edge of Tomorrow are currently streaming on Netflix.
