(WKBN) – More than 80 million people across the United States are expected to travel in some form for the Thanksgiving holiday, according to AAA. It will be a busy time across the country, and unfortunately, the weather is not going to be make things easier.
Here in the valley, travel days are going to be far from sunshine and clear skies. In fact, you’ll want to expect wet and even possibly snow for your commutes this week.
If you and your family are heading out early, Sunday and early Monday look like a great window of opportunity. Travel impacts in the near region and even across the country appear to be minimal for Sunday.
However, Sunday may be the only true dry day in the next several days, which means it is time to prepare for wet, and even snowy travel. Shower development is expected into Monday afternoon with warmest highs of the week in the low 50s. After this, we continue to track a cold front that will significantly drop temperatures in the area, also increasing precipitation chances.
Tuesday will be another day that will be less impactful for some local travel as well, especially for morning commuting. However, wind gusts could be an issue on roadways if traveling in RVs with gusts up to 25 mph. There is a small chance of precipitation into the afternoon, but other than that, dry conditions are expected.
The busiest of travel days, Wednesday, will start out dry, but evening and night travel will become less ideal. Traveling west towards Columbus or beyond, you will run into this system earlier.
Flights could be impacted, so travel experts recommend getting to the airport earlier than normal to avoid any mishaps.
Thanksgiving day travel will likely have some type of shower activity, but how it will impact us at home is unknown still. The forecasts will continue to converge on the correct solution in the coming days.
It is still a bit early to determine if we will have more impact with snow or rain going into Thanksgiving and into the weekend for return travel home. The long-term forecast shows we are expecting another weather system to move through this upcoming weekend to bring snow showers.
