Blue Jays claim Tyler Heineman off waivers, designate Brian Serven for assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays are bringing catcher Tyler Heineman back into the fold.

Toronto announced Monday that it has claimed Heineman off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and designated Brian Serven for assignment.

This will be Heineman’s third stint with the Blue Jays in three years.

The 33-year-old backstop initially signed with the Blue Jays ahead of the 2022 season and played 10 games with the club before being claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Heineman returned to Toronto via trade in April 2023, slashing .276/.432/.379 with two extra-base hits over 19 games.

In the off-season, the New York Mets claimed the switch-hitting catcher off waivers from the Blue Jays and then later traded him to Boston.

Heineman only appeared in two games with the Red Sox this season, going 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch.

In 51 triple-A games this season, Heineman has a .782 OPS with six home runs and eight stolen bases.

Serven, 29, has served as Toronto’s backup catcher since Danny Jansen was traded to the Red Sox ahead of the trade deadline. In 28 games, he recorded 10 hits in 63 at-bats.
