Bob Jones High School band competes for national championship

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — Bob Jones High School band will compete Friday and Saturday at the Bands of America Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.

113 schools from 20 different states are competing in the annual competition at Lucas Oil Stadium. Bob Jones High School is the only Alabama school participating.

“This is the first time we’ve gone, so we’re really excited about that,” said Band Director Leigh Thomas. “We’re just really excited for them to show their hard work off to the whole country.”

Leigh said the band has been preparing for the competition since July and have 3 songs prepared, including “Build a Home” by the Cinematic Orchestra, “Go to War” by Nothing More and “Fix You” by Coldplay.

“A lot of rehearsal goes into this, a lot of hard work to make sure that we’re the best that we can be,” said Senior Trumpet Player Simon Adkins. “I hope that these kids and our whole band in general can understand that we can do hard things, we can go to a giant atmosphere I’ve never been to with a bunch of bands who do this all the time and we’re new, and we can prove that we belong there.”

The two-day competition begins Friday morning with semi-finalists announced at 9 PM. Qualifying teams will compete in several rounds Saturday with finalists announced Saturday night. The competition will conclude with an awards ceremony at 11:30 PM Saturday.
