Budget hearings begin in Youngstown

Budget hearings begin in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — As 2024 draws to a close, Mahoning County Commissioners are now working on their budgets for next year.

Commissioners and their administrator sat down for the first of their hearings with different department heads and office-holders.

First up was Juvenile Court Judge Theresa Delleck and her staff.

Commissioners will finish the year spending around $49 million on the general fund, with another $40 million for criminal justice services — including the sheriff, prosecutor and coroner.

“We have been very conservative in our spending over the last couple years,” said commissioner Anthony Traficanti. “We look at, to make sure we have some cash carryover, we make sure we have a cushion. Our stabilization funds remain as they are, and we want to see where the departments are this year.”

Commissioners hope to wrap up the hearings in the next couple weeks and then release their budget before the end of the year.

“After we get everybody in, and then we will sit down and we’ll go line by line for each department and then we will have a, I always want to give a full budget, and we’re going to do a full budget this year. So that’s what we’re looking for,” Traficanti said.
