But It Goes Against Matt Reeves’ Vision

Despite the DCEU having concluded on a disappointed note, the Elseworlds stories have been doing quite well. Which has also given hope to the upcoming DCU, which is in its budding phase under James Gunn. Matt Reeves’ The Batman has been really successful, and now returning for a second instalment.

Not much has been revealed about The Batman Part II, which is currently under development as we speak. However, some recently unearthed hints show that it might deviate from Reeves’ earlier plans.

The Batman Part II might see the return of Mr. Freeze

Matt Reeves is busy filming The Batman Part II, which will continue after the events established in The Batman. Even though the filmmaker has been pretty tight-lipped about the production of the movie, some details might point to the bigger picture.

In an interview with Collider, Reeves said:

The story plays out over the next weeks that take you toward the end of the year. We don’t play Christmas or New Years, but we’re getting there.

Snow is a recurring theme with Christmas and New Years, and whenever there’s snow, one Batman villain has been tradiotnally involved, Mr. Freeze. Reeves confirmed that The Penguin series will commence a mere week following the dramatic events of The Batman.

Matt Reeves’ originally wanted a grounded story

The first movie was praised for laying the basic groundwork for Bruce Wayne’s transition into Batman. Batman has a quite diverse rogue gallery in comics, but he shines the best when his villains are street-level mafiosos who use their brains instead of superpowers.

Reeves had once told Deadline:

What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythical characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world. We might push to the edge of the fantastical but we would never go into full fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded

However, the inclusion of someone like Mr. Freeze into the storyline of The Batman Part II pushes it more into fantasy. Someone like Hugo Strange or Two-Face might’ve been a better choice for a film that is closer to realism.

The Batman 2 is set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
