Celtic hero admits he was ‘devastated’ to be snubbed for legends game against Man Utd and takes ‘serial winners’ dig

WHEN a Celtic legends select rocked up at Old Trafford this weekend, one former fan favourite was nowhere to be seen.

And he’s been sure to let the club know he isn’t happy.

In doing so, he also had a dig at some of the former pros who were picked to play.

Wayne Rooney was presented with a Celtic top before the match and scored a stunning free-kick to open the scoring.

But Gary Hooper cancelled that one out and the Hoops veterans went on to win the game via a penalty shootout, with Darren O’Dea scoring the decisive spot kick.

A man known for his dead ball prowess was Alan Thompson but he was snubbed by the organisers, with the Hoops XI being managed by Paul Lambert.

Thompson, 50, won every domestic trophy going during his time at Celtic, leaving after seven years with four league winners’ medals, three Scottish Cup gongs and a League Cup winners’ medal to boot.

He was also a key part of the team that reached the 2003 Uefa Cup final under Martin O’Neill, where they lost to a Porto side coached by Jose Mourinho that would go on to win the Champions League trophy a year later.

Thompson scored 51 goals in 227 appearances and even won a cap for England whilst at Celtic.

That latter feat was a first and is still yet to be repeated, with Thompson the only Celtic player to have won an England international cap whilst playing his club football for the Glasgow side.

However, he wasn’t invited to be part of this one, which was arranged to raise funds for the Manchester United Foundation.

He shared his annoyance on Twitter (now X), writing: “Devastated when you don’t get invited to Celtic legends game vs Man Utd at Old Trafford but hey ho, life goes on.

Hollywood superstar Christoph Waltz says he’s DITCHED his own team to support Celtic

“Must have some serial winners to pick from!!!”

The Celtic squad was as follows:

  • Goalkeepers: Artur Boruc, Lukasz Zaluska
  • Defenders: Charlie Mulgrew, Darren O’Dea, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson, Mikael Lustig, Stephen McManus
  • Midfielders: Barry Robson, Joe Ledley, Jonny Hayes, Simon Donnelly, Stiliyan Petrov
  • Forwards: Gary Hooper, Georgios Samaras, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink
