For the better part of the last decade, Kesha has solidified herself as an undefeatable music legend. Whether it is her rap skills, singing, or songwriting, the musician has constantly awed audiences with her relatable and candid songs that also address societal issues.
Thus, it was neither a shock nor as big of a surprise when the singer decided to change the lyrics to her hit song TiK ToK permanently following Sean P Diddy Combs’ legal troubles.
Kesha Changed TiK ToK Lyrics Following Diddy’s Legal Troubles
Kesha has given several chart-topping hits as a singer-songwriter, but one of her most famous songs remains the single, TiK ToK, from her 2010 debut album, Animal. Since the release of the song, it has broken several records and had the highest single-week sales for a female solo artist with 600,000 downloads back when it was released (see Billboard).
Suffice it to say the song remains as famous as ever. But back in April, the singer was on-stage performing at Coachella performing TiK ToK along with her good friend Reneé Rapp. During the performance, she changed the lyrics of the song from Wake up in the morning’ feeling like P. Diddy to Wake up in the morning feeling like, f**k P. Diddy!
The lyrical change was following the myriad of dozens of civil lawsuits against the music producer on the grounds of s*xual abuse, assault, trafficking, and more (via Rolling Stone). Previously too, the singer had changed the lyrics from feeling like P. Diddy to feeling just like me while on tour in light of the Cassie Ventura lawsuit against Diddy (via Billboard).
Changing TiK ToK Lyrics Was an Easy Decision for Kesha and Reneé Rap
Changing the lyrics of a song that has been around for over 15 years is not an easy thing but for Kesha the change was natural. An avid feminist and activist, the singer is known for always being candid and speaking her mind out unabashed. So when it came to changing the lyrics to her single TiK ToK the change was easy given the grave allegations against Diddy.
Her good friend, Rapp, revealed how and why the lyrics were changed (via Just Jared),
[It] was pretty quick and easy for the both of us. Diddy is such a f**king asshole. So many men who were working prominently at that time were such disgraceful shames of human beings. Kesha certainly doesn’t put up with any s**t, and I most definitely don’t put up with any s**t. She raised an entire generation of ‘f**k the man’–like girls. You would have to genuinely go out of your way and hate yourself not to like her.
Some bold words to say, Rapp, just like her friend did not hold back at calling out the currently-in-jail music mogul. Meanwhile, Kesha announced she will re-record her single to officially include the new lyric. Following the performance and lyrical change, the singer revealed in a tweet that the single is special to her and that she will protect no matter what in this changed world.
So while most celebrities close to Diddy have maintained a firm silence, it is admirable for fans to see Kesha taking a stand against the music mogul. Not only does it show her fierce spirit and her undaunted honesty, but this incident is also a testament to her immense fan following and popularity.
TiK ToK is available to be streamed on Spotify.
