Chesapeake's Coughlin wins 2nd LPGA event during Sunday's Scottish Open

Chesapeake's Coughlin wins 2nd LPGA event during Sunday's Scottish Open

IRVINE, Scotland (WAVY) — Scotland is known as the home of golf, so it’s only fitting that former Hickory student and Chesapeake Native Lauren Coughlin can now put a piece of golf’s home into her home.

On Sunday, Coughlin won the Women’s Scottish Open after shooting 3-under par. It’s her second LPGA title of the summer, and now automatically qualifies her for the U.S. Solheim Cup team.

“I played super solid all four days. Just tried to let the wind do what it did and not try to fight it too much. Had good distance, and made some good putts,” Coughlin said.

Lauren (31) is the first over-30-year-old player to rack up her first two LPGA wins in the same season since Karen Stupples did it in 2004. She knows that hard work got her to this point. She’s been an underdog well before she played her college golf at UVA, but even she has to pinch herself in this moment.

“I think if you would’ve told me at the beginning of this year, I wouldn’t believe you… I think it just shows how hard I’ve worked to get here… I wasn’t really recruited coming out of junior golf. I walked on at the University of Virginia, just kind of tried to get better every year,” Coughlin said.

Lauren is currently at 26th in the Women’s World Rankings.
