NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Christopher Newport’s football team hit the practice field as the Captains opened up fall camp, and after a 10-win season and a spot in the playoffs, third-year head coach Paul Crowley has high expectations.
Crowley went to Landstown High School in Virginia Beach and played his college ball at CNU, and he was an assistant under former head coach Matt Kelchner.
Now, the program is his and he oversees a roster that had 135 players on the first day of camp, with all 135 of those players from Virginia.
Fifth-year quarterback Matt Dzierski, a two-time offensive conference player of the year, is back, while running back Gunnar White, who went to Tallwood High School, also returns after he took home the conference offensive player of the year award.
After breaking that playoff drought, Crowley hoping to keep the wins coming.
“It was definitely a milestone,” Crowley said. “The first 16 years of football was something special here under coach Kelchner, and living up to the reputation of that standard is important.”
CNU opens the season on the road in Indiana against Trine University on Sept. 7. The home opener is a week later against Johns Hopkins.
