He was crossing the road near Quarry Street when the vehicle ploughed into him around 12.40am on Sunday, October 27.

Tonight cops issued a major update on their probe into the tragic incident.

Officers said they are now following a “positive line of inquiry” after tracing the vehicle used in the incident.

The motor is now undergoing extensive forensic examinations.

But cops have now further appealed to the public for anyone who may have more information about the crash to come forward.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised but tragically James could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His heartbroken family hailed his “love, energy, and kindness” and described him as a “bright light” in their lives.

They have issued a second statement thanking members of the public who came to James’ aid for their “kindness and courage”.

In a statement, they said: “We have read all the heartfelt messages about James and we’re grateful for the warmth and kindness shared by all who knew him.

“We can’t convey enough how much comfort reading them has brought to us all, thank you so much.

“We would also like to thank Police Scotland for their support and ongoing efforts throughout this time.

“We now know a young man stopped to help our dad and performed CPR.

“We also want to thank staff from a nearby pub who were also there. We want to take this moment to express our deepest gratitude to you.

“Though this experience must have been unimaginably horrific and traumatic, it means so much to know that dad wasn’t alone.

“Thank you for your kindness and courage.”

Officers are again appealing for anyone with information, or who may have seen a black Mercedes A class car in the area, to get in touch.

The vehicle was travelling north on the A723 when the horror collision unfolded.

Police have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and inspecting CCTV footage.

Anyone who was in the area around the time that James was killed have been urged to get in touch.

Sergeant John Houston said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of James at this extremely difficult time.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing and we are following a positive line of enquiry.

“I am appealing to anyone who was in the area around the time and who may have seen a black Mercedes A Class, and who has not already spoken to officers to get in touch.
