A man was charged with DUI on Thursday after a state trooper spotted him allegedly driving more than 100 mph on Interstate 95 in Darien.
A trooper first spotted the motorist shortly before 11 p.m. while attempting to get onto I-95 South from Exit 14 in Norwalk, according to Connecticut State Police.
The driver was in front of the trooper in a Dodge Challenger and allegedly made an “aggressive” left turn onto I-95, state police said. The motorist accelerated at “such a rapid rate” that the engine was louder than usual, according to state police.
State police said the trooper merged onto I-95 and observed the Challenger driver, who allegedly could not stay in one lane and was seen erratically overcorrecting his steering. The vehicle was allegedly initially clocked at 74 mph in a 55 mph zone, state police said. When the trooper got behind the driver he allegedly accelerated and was found to be going 101 mph, according to state police.
The trooper turned on the cruiser’s emergency lights and siren to pull the driver over. Before he stopped, the Challenger driver allegedly reached 109 mph, state police said. The driver stopped prior to Exit 13 in Darien.
The driver was identified as 27-year-old Robert Fabrizio of Stamford. State police alleged that he smelled of alcohol, had watery eyes and “slow speech.”
Fabrizio allegedly failed field sobriety testing and was arrested on charges of reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Dec. 2.
