CT man left dying in the street after ‘targeted’ shooting

A man was shot several times and killed in Bridgeport on Wednesday during what police believe was a targeted shooting.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Spring Street around 5:45 p.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter notification and reports that someone had been shot, according to Capt. Kevin Gilleran of the Bridgeport Police Department.

Police found a man lying in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Gilleran said. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead soon thereafter.

The victim, a 37-year-old Bridgeport man, has not been identified publicly. His next of kin have been notified, according to Gilleran.

Patrol officers secured the scene before members of the Detective Bureau Homicide Squad and the Forensic Identification Unit responded. Detectives canvassed the area in search of witnesses and closed down Spring Street between East Main Street and Kossuth Street while authorities investigated.

According to Gilleran, the preliminary investigation indicates the victim was “singled out” and shot several times before his assailant left the area in a gray four-door Chevrolet sedan. The vehicle was last seen headed south on East Main Street.

Police are asking the public for help identifying a suspect.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Homicide Det. Tom Harper at 203-581-5239. Information can also be left at the Bridgeport Police Tips Line at 203-576-TIPS.

“Chief Roderick Porter, along with the entire Bridgeport Police Department, offers their condolences to the family and friends of the victim,” Gilleran said in a statement.
