CT man pronounced dead after striking tree off Route 164 in Preston

A man was killed late Sunday after his vehicle veered off Route 164 in Preston and crashed into a tree.

Frederick Coonan, 78, of the North Grosvenordale section of Thompson was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla heading north shortly after 8 p.m. when the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane, left the road in the area of Deerbrook Road and struck a tree, according to Connecticut State Police.

State police said the vehicle “rotated from the impact” before coming to rest.

Coonan, the only occupant in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police.

The crash remains under investigation.

Any witnesses to the crash or motorists in the area with dashboard camera footage have been asked to contact Trooper Timothy Wengloski at Troop E at 860-848-6500.
