CT middle schooler charged for allegedly making threat on Snapchat

A middle school student in Meriden faces charges in connection with a school threat he allegedly made on Snapchat that authorities were reportedly able to tie to him with help from the FBI.

Police and school officials on Sunday morning learned of a Snapchat post that was circulating social media and referenced threats against “Edison” students, according to Jeremiah Scully, Deputy Chief of the Meriden Police Department.

Police initially were not sure the threats were directly tied to Edison Middle School. The department’s Detective and School Resource Divisions jointly investigated and requested assistance from the FBI’s New Haven Field Office, according to Scully.

Scully said authorities were then able to identify where the threat originated, which was tied to a student at the middle school. He said identifying the student was a “labor intensive process” and noted that the boy’s parents were cooperative when detectives made contact with the family.

The boy has been charged with first-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace. He was released to the custody of his parents and was expected to appear in Juvenile Court on Monday, Scully said.

According to Scully, a crisis intervention specialist responded to the boy’s residence and conducted an evaluation. The student will be subject to further discipline by the Meriden Board of Education, Scully said.

“The Meriden Police Department and Meriden Public Schools commend those who came forward and provided us with information related to this threatening post,” the police department said in a statement.

Scully said police were expected to have an extra presence at Edison Middle School on Monday to “offer reassurance” to staff, parents and students.
