CT town making numerous improvements after failing to comply with ADA

The town of New Canaan will make numerous improvements across town under an agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office after an individual filed a complaint about inaccessibility in town.

Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced the settlement agreement with the Town of New Canaan to resolve the allegations that some  town facilities failed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Avery’s office said in a release Tuesday.

The complaint specifically named some parks and sports facilities and some parts of the town hall campus as inaccessible.

Federal law requires municipalities to ensure their facilities are accessible to those with disabilities and to make ADA upgrades whenever improvements are made.

To satisfy the agreement, New Canaan will make significant improvements at Waveny Park, New Canaan High School, Mead Park, and the Town Hall, according to the release.

According to Avery, New Canaan officials cooperated with the U.S. Attorney’s Office on the investigation and to resolve the complaints.

“Individuals with disabilities should have equal access to their local park and be able to cheer on their children at a local high school game without worrying about inaccessible facilities,” Avery said. “I am pleased that New Canaan has made this commitment to making its facilities more accessible to individuals with disabilities.”
