Decatur man accused of using bad checks to buy cars, charged with theft

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur Police Department (DPD) says a man has been charged with theft after using bad checks to purchase multiple vehicles.

DPD said Landon Perkins was booked into the Morgan County Jail on Friday and charged with first-degree theft of property.

Authorities said that on June 10, 2024, a car dealership located in Decatur reported a theft to DPD saying that on June 4 Perkins purchased a new vehicle with a check drawn from a “frozen/blocked” bank account in his name.

The department said during the investigation it was found that Perkins had purchased multiple vehicles from dealerships in other jurisdictions by writing checks from the same account. According to DPD, the account was opened on June 4, 2024, with a deposit of $32.00 before Perkins wrote a check from the account in excess of $36,000 to purchase the vehicle. Police said Perkins knew at the time that there were not sufficient funds in the account.

DPD said a warrant for Perkins’ arrest was issued on June 11, 2024. The department said Perkins was released from the Madison County Jail, where he was being held on similar charges, on Friday and taken to the Decatur Police Department where he was arrested on his Morgan County charges.

Perkins is being held at the Morgan County Jail on a $20,000 bond.
