It is popular with bargain hunters for its prices, with some items slashed by up to 70%.

But the shutters will be pulled down on the Company Shop for good due to “a number of factors”, reports Edinburgh Live.

This is despite a petition launched by locals to keep the much-loved shop open.

In a statement shared with customers, bosses said staff had worked “extremely hard during a period of uncertainty”.

They said: “This has not been an easy decision and we have tried to make changes in order to make the store work.

“Our colleagues have worked extremely hard to support this and maintained their usual high standards during a period of uncertainty, which, we are extremely grateful for.

“We know this may come as a surprise, and we want to express our sincere gratitude for your loyalty and support over the years. It’s been a privilege to serve you at this location. Please remember that your membership is for life and can be used at any of our other stores. The nearest store to Edinburgh is located in Renfrew.

“Thank you once again for your support and we look forward to welcoming you at one of our other locations soon. With heartfelt thanks, Company Shop Group.”

The last day of trading will be Sunday, November 10.

It comes as Scotland’s hospitality and retail sectors continue to struggle with both businesses and punters feeling the squeeze from rising costs.

The high street has seen a whole raft of closures over the past year, and more are coming.

Wilko and Paperchase both collapsed into administration, seeing hundreds of shops close and thousands of staff lose their jobs.

Other retailers have announced vast swatches of closures too, including Boots, which is shuttering 300 stores.
