The German giant is closing its doors for an extra day to thank staff for their hard work.

Its shutters will be down on Christmas Day this year, but will remain closed until December 27 this year.

Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi, said: “Christmas is such a special period for many of our colleagues, and by keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day, Aldi gives them more time to spend with their loved ones.

“Customers will have plenty to look forward to in the run-up to Christmas, with exciting Christmas ranges hitting shelves in time for the festive season.”

Aldi began closing their doors on Boxing Day two years ago, and are following suit again this year.

It comes after bargain retailers Home Bargains, John Lewis and Waitrose announced that they would also be shutting their doors on Boxing Day.

It means Scots shoppers will have to wait one more day to begin their post-xmas bargain hunting.

Last year, supermarket chains all over the country adjusted opening times and added holidays to celebrate their employees.

Bargain experts Poundland and John Lewis also closed their doors on Boxing Day, whilst others adjusted opening hours over the festive period to give their staff extra time off.

Opening hours can vary from branch to branch, but you can check the opening times of your local stores online, so you can prepare for Christmas rush.

Last week, Aldi also announced they have plans for expansion.

They plan to open a new Scots store by the end of this year, with plans in place for an £800million upgrade.

The plans look to add 23 stores across the country, with the first to open it’s doors in Castle Douglas, in Dumfries and Galloway.

Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK and Ireland, told Insider: “For every £1 of profit generated last year, we’re investing £2 this year – opening more stores and building the supply infrastructure to bring high-quality, affordable groceries to millions more families the length and breadth of Britain.”

The plans look to open up 182 jobs at the Bathgate Aldi headquarters, alongside another 69 on offer in Edinburgh and Lothian.

Aldi has a starting salary of around £12 an hour, for positions including store and warehouse assistants.

They also offer paid breaks to their staff as standard, and some managerial positions have salaries that rise to up to £43,440 a year.
