Dog dies of smoke inhalation during fire at apartment complex in CT

A dog was killed in a fire at an apartment complex in Groton on Monday evening.

The blaze was reported at the Country Glen Apartments, located at 600 Meridian St. Ext., where responding crews found a building with its fire alarm activated but no visible signs of fire or smoke from the outside, according to the Poquonnock Bridge Professional Firefighters Local 2704.

Crews could smell smoke before entering the building, where heavy smoke in a third-floor apartment was found, fire officials said.

The response included crews from the Sub Base Fire Department as well as mutual aid from the City of Groton, City of New London, Mystic, Old Mystic and Electric Boat Fire Departments. Groton Ambulance, the Town of Groton Police Department as well as Lawrence + Memorial medics also responded, while station coverage was provided by Gales Ferry and Noank Fire Departments.

According to fire officials, crews stretched two hose lines into the building and quickly knocked down the fire, confining it to the apartment of origin. Firefighters searched the apartment where the fire started as well as adjacent third-floor units, finding that a dog had died of smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the displaced residents.

“We extend our gratitude to all responding units for their hard work and teamwork,” Poquonnock Bridge Professional Firefighters Local 2704 said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the families affected by this fire.”
