Douglas High students help build beds for children in need

DOUGLAS, Ala. (WHNT) — Sleep in Heavenly Peace recently opened a chapter in Marshall County, and with the help of Douglas High School students, held their first bed build on Monday.

The group delivers those beds to local child who would otherwise be sleeping on the floor.

Dozens of Douglas High School students put on gloves and protective eyewear and go to work. They helped construct the beds from start to finish.

Douglas High teachers said students will walk away with hands-on woodworking skills, but they hop they take more, like the importance of serving their community.

The fully constructed beds were loaded on a trailer and will be delivered to families in need.

“We’ve gotten to see little three-year-olds come running up and say, ‘I’ve got my first bed,’ or a teenager say, ‘Hey, I’ve got my first bed,'” said Sleep in Heavenly Peace Marshall County Chapter President Bryan Baker. “Every child deserves a good night’s sleep no matter what the situation is. Right now, we’re trying to get the bed in the home, and it comes fully furnished with a mattress and all the bed covering and pillow. When we walk out, they’re ready to go to sleep that night.”

Baker said the original plan was to build 15 or 20 beds, but the volunteers finished more than 70 on Monday.

Parents and legal guardians can apply for a bed for a child through the organization here.
