Earthquake reported in early-morning hours in Walker County

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A small earthquake occurred in the Sipsey community of Walker County early Tuesday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded at approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday along Little Blackwater Creek, in an area between Old Pineywoods Road and Pink and Roxie Dill Road. The earthquake depth reportedly covered 1.8 kilometers, or roughly 1.1 miles.

The USGS reports that they received 55 reports from people in the area who felt the earthquake, but that the shaking was reportedly between “weak” and “light.” No damage has been reported in the wake of the earthquake.

Due to its location and not being along any major fault lines, earthquakes in Alabama tend to be rare. The largest recorded earthquake in the state was on October 18, 1916, when a 5.1-magnitude earthquake that was felt the hardest in Irondale and the surrounding area.
