Eiichiro Oda’s Key to Making the Best Protagonist Goes Against Everything that Made Gojo a World-Famous Character

In 1999, when Eiichiro Oda came up with the idea of a rubber boy becoming a pirate to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming the King of the Pirates, the world laughed at his face. Fast forward to 2024, and the series is arguably the most popular Shonen series, which none of the new-gen shows come even close to.

The storyline of the series is unmatched, and being a show that has been airing for so long, it should follow a set of rules in its story that keep it consistent and well-received among the fans. One such rule is that he would never make his main character broken, who can turn the tide whenever he feels like it.

Hence, it explains why Luffy and his Straw Hat members have been searching for the most alluring treasure for the past 25 years. However, Gege Akutami demonstrates this rule in his series, where he made Satoru Gojo so overpowered and devilishly handsome that he became a global sensation.

Gojo Satoru Discards One Holy Rule of Eiichiro Oda

In the modern Shonen scene, Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen has become one of the most popular series that has received a global fan following. The series flaunted a gripping storyline and a long list of characters each having epic fights, featuring bewitching animation.

While the series has tons of reasons to be popular, the most concrete explanation for its allure would be The Honored One. More than a pretty face, Gojo is a special case who has managed to steal the limelight on multiple occasions.

Within the series, he has a godlike complexion and the status of being the strongest Jujutsu sorcerer; hence, the term overpowered would suit him perfectly. However, the character’s popularity directly breaks one rule that Eiichiro Oda most ardently follows in his magnum opus, especially with Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro.

During an exclusive interview via Screen Rant, the manga artist explained that “When creating a protagonist, it is important not to make him overly powerful.” He further gave the example of Akainu being so strong that “he can put an end to One Piece within a year.”

Indeed, the Fleet Admiral is one of the strongest characters in the series, and a sneak peek of his Devil Fruit ability was shown in the Marineford War Arc, where he took on Whitebeard. While he is battling paperwork in the series, when the series would feature him in action, he would be a menace.

Gojo Satoru’s Power Could Not Save Him from Gege Akutami’s Wrath

Despite Gojo assuring Itadori Yuji and the fandom that he is the strongest, and if he battles Sukuna in his full power, he would come out as the victor. However, the result was different when the two faced each other, which sent the entire internet in dismay and shock.

The Blindfolded Idiot was brutally torn apart in two pieces by The Dishonored One. While the outcome was shocking, fans came up with their own theories, explaining the reason behind his humiliating death.

However, Akutami-Sensei hushed those theories as they shared rude comments about the fan-favorite character. The comments were shared by CBR, which featured statements like “Something Gojo doesn’t have.. probably a personality” and “Now that Gojo is gone, it’s looking like 2020’s gonna be a good year,” expressing their loathe for the character.

Despite not coming forward with a proper explanation for the reason behind their hate but hyping up the character’s strength so much. Nevertheless, bestowing so much power only to give an embarrassing death to the character showcases his deep-lingering detest for Gojo.

Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll, and the manga can be read on Viz Media.
