Extra police presence at CT schools amid social media posts

Extra police presence at CT schools amid social media posts

An extra police presence was expected at several schools in New Haven on Wednesday after authorities learned of a number of alleged threats made on social media that referenced school shootings.

The social media posts alluded to what investigators described as “several vague, unverified threats” and are believed to have been posted by someone in another state, according to Officer Christian Bruckhart of the New Haven Police Department.

Bruckhart said the posts referenced school shootings that would take place on “9/11” and named several schools in Connecticut.

“Any threat of this nature is taken seriously, however we do not find any credible information which leads us to believe any schools in the city are in danger,” Bruckhart said.

School resource officers and detectives in New Haven have been monitoring the posts and working to identify who posted them.

“We take the safety of our students with the utmost importance and will continue to assess this situation,” Bruckhart said. “In an abundance of caution, police presence will be implemented so parents and students can be assured they are safe.”

The threatening posts come amidst numerous other similar incidents being investigated involving Connecticut schools so far this school year. Threats or similar incidents have been investigated over the past few weeks at schools in Milford, Bristol, Meriden, Ansonia, Bloomfield, Windsor, Naugatuck, Cromwell and Stamford.

Many of these incidents follow a deadly school shooting last week in Georgia.
