Fallout 4 Has the Best Combat in Any Bethesda Game, Thanks to the Creators of the One Franchise That Further Inspired Space Marine 2: Todd Howard

Fallout 4 was released nearly a decade ago but is still highly revered by the gaming community. Some players would argue that this installment had the best combat across the entire Fallout series, and this was greatly due to the contributions of ID Software, the game developers behind the iconic Doom franchise. It is a great feeling of fulfillment once fellow game developers use a different game for inspiration and have established a strong footing on the subject matter.

Video game developers often struggle with combat and gameplay mechanics because not every player has the same set of skills, especially in a game like Fallout. Fortunately, the developers of ID Software are the best in the business and shared their knowledge with director Todd Howard which later inspired him and his team to work independently for the next major project: Starfield.

ID Software Deserves Credit for the Great Combat Gameplay and Shooting Mechanics in Fallout 4

The game developers of Bethesda Game Studios are finally rolling out new content for Starfield for the upcoming Shattered Space expansion coming later this month. Director Todd Howard spent years working on his ambitious space project and the team worked on everything without help or support from other studios. ID Software collaborated with the developers on Fallout 4 many years ago, and the studio was generally responsible for the improved and snappy gunplay that is extremely similar to the combat of Doom.

Director Todd Howard made it known that he is a huge fan of the Doom franchise, and revealed the folks of ID Software did provide him with a few tips of improving the Fallout series. Everything about Starfield was purely made from the ground up within the walls of Bethesda Game Studios which was a massive endeavor for the game developers.

DOOM Eternal is one of my favorite games. So with Fallout 4, they did give us a few tips on how to handle combat. And Starfield, we redid the combat ourselves and it’s really feeling great. But id has helped us really more on the graphic. They’ve helped us on the graphic side.

The success of ID Software later inspired Saber Interactive for the combat of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. The developers were fans of the new feature introduced in Doom called Glory Kills and wanted to bring that into the latest entry. The similarities between the two franchises are quite obvious, and it would make sense for Saber Interactive to use something that resonates well with the gaming community.

The influence of great games often sparks the creation of equally inspiring titles, showcasing how advancements by one game developer are continually outdone by others in the industry. Fallout 4 had earned its rightful place as one of the better games in the franchise, and it was a product of collaboration between two great gaming studios.

Howard revealed that during the production of Starfield, the executives of Microsoft initially convinced him to delay the game after the Zenimax acquisition blew over which bought the developers enough time to work on improving the game. Unfortunately, the game had its fair share of flaws and shortcomings, and the success of previous projects was not carried over.

Perhaps if Starfield were made with the same level of attention to detail as Fallout 4 and carried over the combat mechanics, the gaming community would have had a different first impression. ID Software struck gold with the combat of Doom and rather than scrap it and move on from it like Bethesda Game Studios often do, the studio kept improving and revolutionizing the feature.

Saber Interactive saw the success of Doom Eternal and knew this would benefit Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 and jumped on board the wagon as fast as they could. The sequel’s success will likely pave the way for an upcoming sequel and the developers already planted seeds for the future. Some fans are convinced about the involvement of the Necrons which will lead to another bloody and gory adventure.

Bethesda Game Studios was fortunate to have the aid of ID Software while working on Fallout 4, and some fans hoped these teachings would survive and be passed on to future projects. Nevertheless, director Todd Howard has been in the gaming industry long enough to know what he is doing.
