A FIREFIGHTER was injured after tackling a deliberate blaze in a block of flats.
Emergency crews were called to the fire in King Street, Peterhead, in the early hours of this morning.
Three fire engines were deployed to the scene in the Aberdeenshire town.
Locals were forced to evacuate their homes as the blaze roared.
Rescue workers were forced to use fire escape hoods to safely get people out of their homes.
A 58-year-old firefighter suffered a leg injury from a fall while tackling the blaze.
He was raced to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he was treated for his injury.
He has since been discharged from hospital.
Police are probing the blaze but say they believe the fire was started deliberately.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances to King Street, Peterhead, where firefighters were met by a fire within a block of flats.
“Crews used breathing apparatus and specialist fire escape hoods to lead a number of residents to safety.
“One firefighter was transported to Aberdeen’s Royal Infirmary by paramedics where he received treatment for a leg injury.
“He has since been discharged from hospital.
“The fire has now been extinguished and firefighters remain on scene working to ensure the area is made safe.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.20am on Tuesday, 17 September, 2024 we were called to a report of a fire in a block of flats on King Street, Peterhead.
“Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
“A number of properties have been evacuated.
“A 58-year-old man – a fire fighter – was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment to injuries following a fall.

“King Street remains closed between Ugie Street and Windmill Street.
“Enquiries remain ongoing however the fire is being treated as wilful.”
