Flames, Blue Jackets to hold candlelight vigils to honour Gaudreau brothers

Both the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets announced Tuesday that they will be holding candlelight vigils to honour the lives of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau after the brothers were killed on Thursday night.

The events are both scheduled for Wednesday evening.

Calgary’s will take place at 8 p.m. MT / 10 p.m. ET at the west stairs of the Scotiabank Saddledome, where a memorial to the Gaudreaus currently sits. The Flames announced that the event is expected to be 45 minutes, including speakers from the organization and a 13-minute vigil for Johnny and Matthew.

For those unable to attend, Calgary will stream the candlelight vigil on the Flames website, app and on the team’s social media channels.

Fans in Columbus on Friday made a memorial out of hockey sticks, flowers and other mementos outside the Blue Jackets’ downtown arena. Flames fans in Calgary, Alberta, also paid tribute with messages and Gaudreau’s No. 13 written in chalk on the ground outside the Saddledome.

The Blue Jackets said fans are invited to their candlelight vigil on Wednesday night outside Nationwide Arena, which will include brief remarks from members of the organization as well as 13 minutes, 21 seconds of silent remembrance for the jersey numbers worn by Johnny and Matthew.

Columbus’ vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. MT.
