Forget Skyrim, Even Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Elden Ring Lacks 1 Feature Todd Howard Needs to Add in Elder Scrolls 6

The Elder Scrolls series has long been renowned for its vast open-world exploration, diverse landscapes, and immersive gameplay. While Skyrim set the bar high with its dragon battles and expansive open world and narrative, The Elder Scrolls 6 has the opportunity to push the franchise even further.

One area where the game could truly shine is in expanding travel options beyond just horses. Imagine riding dragons through the skies, riding sea creatures across the waters, or even taming a giant for a completely different perspective on the world. There are a lot of possibilities to explore.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Could Innovate on a Lot of Fronts Including Mounts

For years, horses have been the go-to mount in the Elder Scrolls series, but the time has come to introduce more options. Even fans have discussed this possibility for the highly anticipated installment that’s on the way. Beasts like saber cats, bears, and even mammoths being mounts would be crazy.

Riding a saber cat could enhance speed through dense forests, while a mammoth might help navigate rugged, mountainous regions, all while staying rooted in the lore of the Elder Scrolls world. Another exciting possibility would be the inclusion of dragons as mounts. Skyrim offered a glimpse of this with the Dragonborn’s ability to control dragons in limited circumstances.

Elder Scrolls 6 could take it a step further. Full-blown aerial combat or simply traveling on a dragon would completely change players’ approach to the game’s map. The sheer scale and thrill of soaring the skies would add a layer of depth that no open-world RPG has yet explored fully, not even in games like Elden Ring.

Another opportunity lies in the oceans and rivers. Until now, water travel in Elder Scrolls games has been mostly nonexistent or reduced to boats as background elements. Imagine if Elder Scrolls 6 allowed players to summon sea creatures in the form of giant turtles, krakens, or other aquatic mounts. Or simply, a boat too.

But simply adding mounts is not enough. Bethesda should also focus on refining the mechanics of mounted gameplay. In Skyrim, mounted combat was limited and often impractical, leaving many players to dismount before engaging in battle.

The Elder Scrolls 6 could improve this by offering a more dynamic mounted combat system. Players could level up a mounted combat skill tree, unlocking special abilities like horse-mounted archery or using magic while riding. Even a game like Elden Ring had issues with its mount system.

One cannot ignore the potential for customization as well. Just as players can upgrade weapons and armor, mounts could have their own progression systems. Feeding, training, and equipping mounts with saddles or armor could deepen the bond between the player and their mount.

Elder Scrolls 6 has the potential to break away from the traditional constraints of travel and mount systems, and it’s clear that players are ready for more than just horses. Bethesda has the potential to create a richer, more immersive world where exploration isn’t just a means to an end, but an adventure in itself.

With the vast lore to draw from, Todd Howard and his team have the opportunity to take the franchise to new heights. Literally and figuratively. The Elder Scrolls 6 could redefine what it means to explore an open-world RPG.
