Former Auburn quarterback Lloyd Nix dies at 87

AUBURN, Ala. (WHNT) — The 1957 National Championship team quarterback and distinguished alumnus died Friday in Decatur.

Auburn University posted on social media Friday that Lloyd Nix had passed away at the age of 87.

Nix was in Auburn’s 1959 class and was most known for being the quarterback on Auburn’s 1957 national championship team.

According to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Nix was quarterback for two historic seasons in Auburn football history: the 1957 National Championship season and the 1958 season, in which Auburn finished with a 9-0-1 record and fourth place in the AP Poll.

ASHOF said Nix played both offense and defense and he was named to the All-SEC team two times.

Nix also played baseball at Auburn and in 1958, he was the first baseman on Auburn’s SEC baseball championship team and was named to the All-SEC team.

According to the university’s website, Nix was named as a 2010 COSAM Distinguished Alumnus.

After graduating from Auburn, Nix attended the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and then moved to Amarillo, Texas where he served in the U.S. Air Force. From there, he moved to Decatur where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 1999.
