A former staff member at a group home in Wethersfield has been charged in connection with multiple assaults of an autistic woman who had to be treated at the hospital.
Kendra A. Demudd, 24, of Hartford turned herself in on Wednesday on charges of second-degree assault of a person with an intellectual disability, second-degree reckless endangerment and cruelty to persons, according to the Wethersfield Police Department.
Police said they were notified on Oct. 30 around 1:30 p.m. of multiple assaults involving the same victim that had occurred at a HARC, Inc. group home at 50 Eastern Drive. The home provides 24/7 services for intellectually and physically disabled individuals.
According to police, the assaults had occurred on Oct. 13 and were not immediately reported. Police said a 28-year-old non-verbal autistic woman who was a resident of the home was assaulted multiple times in the early morning hours by a staff member. The victim suffered multiple head and facial lacerations as well as a closed fracture of her nasal bones. She was taken in an ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.
According to police, two employees of the group home were fired before the assaults were reported to authorities. Police obtained a warrant for Demudd’s arrest during the investigation.
She was held on a $50,000 bond following her arrest and was expected to be arraigned Wednesday in New Britain Superior Court.
Leadership at HARC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
