PARTS of Scotland will be battered by strong winds and heavy downpours today.

Another alert for strong northwesterly winds has been issued from 9.30am to 6pm.

Swathes of Angus, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Caithness, and Orkney will be hit by powerful gusts.

Gales will reach 60mph in some coastal and hilly areas, with speeds of 65mph across Orkney.

Some travel disruption is expected, with journeys potentially taking longer than usual.

Delays for high-sided vehicles on bridges is likely and there could also be short periods of power loss in some areas.

The Met Office has said the wind should gradually ease later this afternoon.

A band of slow-moving heavy rain is passing over Orkney and Shetland.

The Met Office has warned that prolonged downpours could lead to flooding and transport disruption in the northern isles.

The national weather service expects 50 to 80mm to fall in some parts of Shetland.

The wet conditions should clear over Orkney in the afternoon and during the evening in Shetland.

The Met Office has urged anyone travelling today to check road conditions and timetables, and amend transport plans if necessary.

Over the weekend many Scots experienced bright, sunny weather with temperatures reaching above 20C in some parts.

But the summery conditions are set to subside.

In Edinburgh, the maximum temperature is expected to reach 12C tomorrow, 11C on Thursday, 13C on Friday, and 17C on Saturday and Sunday.

In Glasgow, there are expected to be highs of 13C tomorrow, 12C on Thursday, 13C on Friday, and 17C on Saturday and Sunday.

In Aberdeen, there will be highs of 12C tomorrow, 10C on Thursday 13C on Friday, 16C on Saturday, and 17C on Sunday.
