From “I Hate You” to “The best Jedi master” Compliment, Star Wars’ Darth Vader Hayden Christensen’s Relationship With Ewan McGregor Has Come a Long Way

Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor have come a long way from their initial days doing the Star Wars prequel movies. They both admitted that they were not in touch after the films, but reconnected when they appeared in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. The bond between the actors has since grown and Christensen made an appearance at McGregor’s Walk of Fame ceremony.

It was a wholesome day for fans when Anakin called Obi-Wan “the best Jedi Master”. Christensen and McGregor would love to work again on a Star Wars project, potentially a second season of Obi-Wan. While it’s a distant possibility now, both actors expressing interest in returning to their roles might force Disney to do something about it.

Hayden Christensen’s Words Of Praise For Ewan McGregor Made The Day For Star Wars Fans

Hayden Christensen met Ewan McGregor on the Attack of the Clones set, where he received the biggest welcome from the actor. McGregor gave Christensen the “most disarmingly warm embrace” during their initial meeting. Christensen remembered him as “the nicest person” on the Star Wars set when he appeared at McGregor’s Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony (via EW).

Christensen shared that meeting McGregor was like meeting a friend. He went on to joke that the friend would later “chop off both my legs and leave me for dead on the side of a volcano”, a reference to the final scene between them in Revenge of the Sith. Christensen further added that McGregor’s Obi-Wan was a “masterclass in great acting.”

He concluded by thanking the Fargo star for being “the best Jedi Master” and for always having his back. The praise means a lot to Star Wars fans, especially coming from Anakin Skywalker, who spitefully yells at Obi-Wan at the end of the third prequel film, “I hate you.”

McGregor also praised Christensen in his speech, sharing that they grew up together in the “crazy world” of Star Wars for more than two decades. Interestingly, when fans saw them together the last time on a Star Wars project, they were still at odds, fighting each other despite their real-life friendship.

The touching tribute is a testament to how McGregor and Christensen carried forward the legacy of George Lucas‘ sci-fi films in the early 2000s. While they didn’t get the deserved appreciation due to the mixed reception of the film, fans now largely see them as Star Wars legends.

Over the years, fans changed their stance about Star Wars prequel films from harsh criticism to immense appreciation. While promoting Obi-Wan, both Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor expressed their love for the prequel films (via X). McGregor shared how the late appreciation changed his outlook towards Star Wars. He shared (via Nerdist):

Those films were critically not liked very much… But what we didn’t hear at the time was people your age, your generation. We meet those people now who really love our films, but it’s taken us 15 years to hear that and it’s so nice… it’s changed my outlook. My relationship with Star Wars is different because of that.

During an interview with Variety, McGregor shared that he hoped to get another shot at Obi-Wan as he felt he had more story to tell. He shared:

I really do hope we get a chance to do another one…. Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.

Christensen also seems interested in the idea of more Obi-Wan as he shared that it was a no-brainer. He shared that he always wanted to do more with McGregor and watch him play the Jedi Master. Christensen shared:

If it means that I got to do more with Ewan, then that’s a no-brainer, but I really hope that he continues with the character. Just as a fan, it’s so exciting to get to watch him play Obi-Wan — he’s just so good at it.

In 2023, Kathleen Kennedy noted that a second season of Christensen and McGregor’s Obi-Wan was not in consideration at that point. However, she addressed the cast’s interest in returning and shared that they might consider the project down the road (via Variety).

Obi-Wan Kenobi is now available for streaming on Disney+.
