The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is not exactly doing well in Germany at the moment. Chancellor Olaf Scholz hardly seems to have any control over his bickering ‘traffic light coalition’ (‘Ampelkoalition’), his popularity has plummeted, and after a dismal showing in the European elections in June, three weeks ago he suffered setbacks in the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia. A victory in the vote in Brandenburg on Sunday would be a boost.
