Heartstopper Season 3 Review – The Type of Series That Gives You Hope

Alice Oseman’s popular graphic novel Heartstopper is returning for its third season on Netflix. Oseman also writes that the series has found a beautiful way to tell the stories of the LGTBQ community in a thought-provoking, eye-opening manner. The series has seen much success with audiences and critics, as both seasons sit over 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 3 picks up where we left off, with Nick trying to help Charlie overcome his eating disorder while the couple faces other challenges.

Heartstopper Season 3 Review

In today’s society, where the LGBTQ community often faces judgment and discrimination, shows like Heartstopper play a vital role. They provide a platform for people within the community to see a reflection of themselves, fostering a sense of understanding and acceptance. Alice Oseman, the creator of the graphic novel and the series, understands the responsibility she has in portraying these characters’ journeys in ways that audiences can reflect on and relate to.

Charlie and Nick’s relationship, depicted in Heartstopper, has its share of ups and downs. In season 3, we see them picking up from where they left off in season 2, with Charlie’s battle with an eating disorder taking center stage. This struggle begins to strain their relationship and even affects his family dynamics. Alice Oseman’s understanding and sensitive portrayal of this common teenage issue, handled with grace and empathy, make it a story many can relate to.

Joe Locke and Kit Connor have some of the best on-screen chemistry of any couple. It’s the little things like when you see one of them show up at their house, and when they open the door, the glow on their face is priceless. It never feels forced, and it’s because of that we are so quickly falling in love with this journey. That said, the duo had to take charge with a new series of challenges ahead of them. Between further digging into Charlie’s eating disorder and figuring out when to have sex, Joe and Kit had to deliver even more on this foundation of love. Joe Locke continues to impress as Charlie with the raw emotion he brings to the character.

I will say I did miss Oliva Colman as Sarah Nelson/Nick’s mother this season. For scheduling purposes, Colman was unable to reprise her role as the level-headed Sarah. However, adding Eddie Marsan as Charlie’s therapist was a nice touch. Marsan, known for his more villainous roles, was quite a warm blanket the show needed to help Charlie get past his struggles.

Heartstopper is such an aesthetically pleasing series to watch. Cinematographers Simona Susnea and Diana Olifirova brought vibrant colors to life, perfectly depicting every mood our characters feel. This pairs well with Adiescar Chase’s absolutely mesmerizing score. There are often small moments in the show where there is little to no speaking, and Chase’s score brings that emotion to life. The technical levels of this series are almost as impressive as the rest of the show’s elements.

Is Heartstopper Season 3 worth watching?

It’s a breath of fresh air that Alice Oseman continues to deliver this beautiful story of inclusion. Every episode depicts the reality that teenagers face daily. As seen with the Netflix documentary Will & Harper, if people are willing to listen and understand, we as a collective whole could be better for it. Heartstopper is one of Netflix’s best original shows, and season 3 only ramped up that belief for me. If you enjoyed the first two seasons, you will thoroughly enjoy this one.
