Hideaki Anno is a prolific director in the anime world. You might know him from his most celebrated creation, the Evangelion franchise. While the director is surfing his successes with one hit film after another, it seems that his one dream production is far from his control.
Anno was previously involved in the animation of Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Thus, he has always wanted to remake the movie on his own terms. There have also been rumors that the director wants to create an anime series out of the source material left out during the movie’s creation.
Hideaki Anno Wants to Create a Live-Action Adaptation of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Toshio Suzuki is one of the founding members of the world-renowned Studio Ghibli. The former president of the studio revealed in an interview that Hideaki Anno has shown interest in creating a live-action Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
Hideaki Anno was one of the notable animators behind the movie and was assigned to draw the attack sequence of the Giant Warriors. Suzuki himself admitted that the animation is one of the high points of the film. Thus Anno knows about the intricacies of the plot. Suzuki also revealed that despite there being several requests to create a live-action of the movie, the answer has always been no.
The one person who never wanted to make it was actually Hayao Miyazaki, the other co-founder of Ghibli. According to Suzuki, Miyazaki has repeatedly shut down Hollywood offers for a live-action Nausicaä remake. However, if anyone has a slight chance, it would be Anno due to his previous involvement with the anime film.
Emma Watson Might be the Perfect Actress for Nausicaä
If Hideaki Anno is indeed able to convince Hayao Miyazaki for a live-action adaptation of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, he would still need to find the perfect cast. The cast members would have to be nothing short of perfect if Anno wants Miyazaki to be pleased with it.
Nausicaä is the princess of the Valley of the Wind, and despite being a young adult, her wisdom is way beyond her age. She is not only a strong and independent character, but she is also brave, intelligent, loyal, and compassionate. She is even willing to sacrifice herself to save others. Emma Watson has played several such powerful characters.
Watson also has experience with live-action adaptation as she was cast as Belle in Disney’s remake of Beauty and the Beast. Some of her other roles as strong female characters include Hermione Granger in Harry Potter, Meg March in Little Women, and Ila in Noah. Each of these characters is extremely courageous at heart and is the embodiment of perseverance. Thus making Emma Watson the perfect fit for Nausicaä.
