Hollis Wright Player of the Week: QB has near-perfect night in Week 3 win

The Week 3 Hollis Wright Birmingham area Football Player of the Week was near perfect through the air as he led his team to a Class 5A, Region 6 win last week.

Deon Moore, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior, connected on 14-of-16 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns as Center Point beat Lincoln 50-0 in the region opener. He also ran the ball 12 times for 76 yards and a TD as Center Point won its second straight to improve to 2-1.

Moore picked up 4,824 of the 10,174 votes cast in the AL.com weekly poll, good for 47 percent of the total.

Oak Grove junior linebacker/running back Ethan Jones was second in the balloting with 1,979 votes – 19 percent of the total. The 5-7, 165-pound Jones had eight tackles, with two for a loss, and recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the Tigers’ 37-12 win at Holt. Oak Grove is 3-0 and 1-0 in Class 4A, Region 4 play.

Woodlawn quarterback Andre Russell finished third in the voting at 9 percent, 942 votes. The 5-11, 175-pound senior had 469 all-purpose yards, completing 26-of-38 passes for 347 yards and three TDs. He also ran 16 times 122 yards in a 48-27 loss to Minor. The Colonels are 0-3 thus far and 0-1 in 6A, Region 5.
