WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — A man was arrested on Friday after crashing his car and breaking into a home.
Warren police were called to the 700 block of Hazelwood Avenue SE around 3:30 a.m. Friday by a woman who said an unknown man was in her home.
Dispatch advised officers en route that the suspect, who was later identified as Ja’Vontai Harris, had left the home and was trying to get into the caller’s car. When police arrived on scene, reports state they observed Harris attempting to get back into the house through the front door.
Reports state Harris had a bottle of liquor in his hand and suspected cocaine was also recovered. Police also noted they recognized Harris from a traffic stop the night before.
The homeowner told police she believed Harris came in through the front door — which was left unlocked. She said Harris made his way upstairs where she confronted him and told him to leave, stating he appeared drunk, according to reports.
Reports state home security footage shows the woman escorting Harris to her front door and out of the house.
She told police that Harris likely crashed his car before burglarizing her home, saying she heard a crash and then didn’t recognize the car parked in her yard.
After investigating, police reported that a car had hit a stop sign at the intersection of Hazelwood and Grandview Street. When questioned about it, reports state Harris told police he was “just chilling” driving and didn’t see the sign.
Harris is charged with felony burglary and could also face drug-related charges pending lab results. He was also cited for no license and failure to control.
He appeared in court Tuesday morning on the charges.
