Hoover traffic stop leads to mother’s arrest after police discover boy beaten with a cord

Hoover traffic stop leads to mother’s arrest after police discover boy beaten with a cord

A traffic stop in Hoover led to the arrest of a woman on a felony child abuse charge.

Brittney Nicole Johnson, 28, is charged with child abuse/torture, according to court records made public Wednesday.

Officers assigned to the Hoover Police Department’s Traffic Division stopped a vehicle Monday for a minor traffic violation.

Lt. Daniel Lowe said police found a young child inside the vehicle who showed signs of child abuse. He was under the age of 12.

The department’s Special Victims Unit launched an investigation, which determined the boy had been beaten repeatedly struck with a cord, leaving significant visible injuries, according to Lowe and charging documents.

The investigation is ongoing in conjunction with the Department of Human Resources and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

Because of the child’s age, Lowe said, no additional details are being released.

Johnson, the boy’s mother, was taken into custody at the scene. She was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Wednesday and remains held on $15,000 bond.
