The Round of 12 began with an entertaining race at the Texas Motor Speedway last Sunday. It was Kyle Larson’s race to lose, as the 2021 series champion won the second stage, leading the 400-mile race into the closing laps. With just 19 to go, battling with Bubba Wallace for the lead, Larson spun and hit the Turn 2 wall, leading to a 31st-place finish.
It ended up being a different Hendrick Motorsports driver that came out on top. William Byron won his season-leading sixth checkered flag of 2023, becoming the first competitor to clinch a spot in the Round of 8.
Though he finished third last Sunday, Wallace is the first driver outside of the cutoff line, coming into ‘Dega two points back of Kyle Larson. Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney and former champion Kyle Busch are the three others looking to work their back up into the top eight.
Busch is the driver who won the lone regular season race at the famous superspeedway in April of this year, marking just the second time in his career he has won at ‘Dega. Other postseason combatants that have won in Alabama include Wallace, Blaney, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski and Ross Chastain.
