I loaned Charles Green £25,000 when he had nothing, then he took £6m compensation in Rangers row

CRAIG WHYTE reckons he was the best thing that ever happened to ex-Rangers chief executive Charles Green.

He made the outlandish claim in a tell-all Youtube video detailing his career since Rangers, buying the club from Sir David Murray and the turbulent years that followed.

And despite Green becoming embroiled in a fraud probe over his Rangers takeover – later deemed to be ‘malicious’ – Whyte thinks it’s the best deal the Yorkshire businessman will have ever done.

After Whyte plunged Gers into administration on Valentine’s Day 2012 Green tried to strike a creditors voluntary agreement with Ibrox administrators Duff and Phelps that spring but the proposal was kyboshed by HMRC.

Instead he bought up Gers assets, became CEO and shifted them to a new company but 10 first-team players refused to transfer over.

However resigned a year later over claims he was linked to old owner Whyte.

An internal investigation at Gers cleared him of links but he was later arrested in a fraud probe involving Whyte – then cleared – and agreed compensation over the ‘malicious’ prosecution.

It’s that episode that Whyte reckons was the best deal he’s ever done – and claims he helped him out with a loan for legal fees to get things moving.

Speaking to digital marketing consultant Craig Campbell on Youtube, Whyte said: “I think it was quite amazing that the Scottish government decided to pay compensation to the administrators who were charged with a crime and to Charles Green.

“But I don’t feel aggrieved because my view is that you get on with life. Living your life by talking to lawyers every day and dealing with lawsuits, whether you’re the person suing or being sued or being prosecuted, it’s no way to live.

“I think part of the reason that the Duff & Phelps guys and Charles Green got compensation was, well, again, government incompetence, just paying out money because it’s not their money – they don’t care.

“It’s probably the best deal that they ever did. I’d say Charles Green, when I first met him, I had to lend him 25 grand to pay his legal fees.

“He had no money at all. And I delivered the Rangers deal to him on a plate and he’s walked away selling a lot of Rangers shares, getting six million quid in compensation.

“I think the best thing ever happened to Charles Green was meeting me.”

Whyte made several other bombshell claims in the 90-minute video, including that HMRC top brass admitted they regretted not doing a deal with Gers instead of leading the club into admin.

Whyte also revealed he is now an investor in an American stock market and deals in the gold and oil markets and has his own advisory service called Acequisition.
