JOHN HIGGINS has revealed he was forced to swap cues after his old one became like a BANANA.
The four-time world champion’s trusted cue was “ruined” due to water damage on the way back from the Saudi Arabia Masters.
Speaking after beating David Gilbert 4-1 to reach the last 16 of the English Open, Higgins said: “I’ve not said this before but when I came back from Saudi my cue was ruined.
“It was soul destroying because I really liked it. It was like a banana, the wood was ruined.
“Between the stopover in Paris and Edinburgh it was like monsoon rain.
“My ski tube must have been sitting on the tarmac because when I got to Edinburgh my tube was soaking wet.
“I left it in the hall as normal.
“I was going to Portugal on holiday so I got my cue out and the water had seeped into it.
“The cue’s ruined.”
But after getting a new cue shipped back home, Higgins believes it can rejuvenate him.
He added: “It’s maybe a blessing because it’s as if I’ve come back to the measurements I was playing with two or three years ago.
“I kept going shorter and shorter and maybe it wasn’t suiting me. It’s given me a new lease of life.”
Meanwhile, Ross Muir continued his fine run in Brentwood with an impressive 4-1 victory over Jamie Jones.
Breaks of 107, 64, 45 and 41 did the damage as the Edinburgh cueman sent another player ranked above him packing.
Anthony McGill was dumped out 4-1 by world champion Kyren Wilson in a re-run of their famous 2020 Crucible semi-final.
