Mackie claims that another of his acting endeavors is superior to any of the projects he has worked on at Marvel. After working in six films for the Marvel Studios, Mackie’s comments on the limitations and downsides of the franchise are largely perceived as backstabbing behavior.

In a bizarre turn of events, Anthony Mackie has managed to land himself in a complicated situation within the Marvel fandom. This, ahead of his first project in a lead role as the new Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World is not an ideal situation. The actor compared working on the Marvel projects to his show Twisted Metal.

According to Mackie, Twisted Metal is based on an eponymous vehicular combat video game. A collaborative endeavor from Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, the post-apocalyptic action comedy reigns supreme to Marvel in one particular sense.

The actor believes working on Twisted Metal was more creatively liberating as opposed to anything he’s been a part of at Marvel. The events of the comic books essentially demarcate Marvel. And in the attempt to keep the shows and movies canonical, the creatives at Marvel remain confined to Stan Lee’s imagination and how things play out in the comics; saying Marvel is a form of “controlled entertainment”.

Why Does Anthony Mackie Believe So?

In an interview with British news outlet RadioTimes at the local premiere of Twisted Metal, Mackie explained his thought process behind the notion. He said:

“I would say the Marvel thing is completely different, just because it’s such a space of controlled entertainment. Like, there’s only so much you can do. There’s only so much creativity you can bring to the table, because Stan Lee gave us so much content. Whereas with [Twisted Metal], it was like, ‘There’s a guy and a girl… go!’ So we were really able to build the world around it.”

The actor further elaborated:

“And that’s the hard thing about the Marvel universe. It’s like, you can’t really go outside of the lines of those comic books.”

While Mackie had a rational explanation for his statements, it might still rub people off the wrong way. Considering how long the actor has been associated with the MCU, fans are bound to take offense.

Twisted Metal is available for streaming on Peacock.
