One of the most effective advocates for school choice in recent years has been Corey DeAngelis. He has been affiliated with groups like the American Federation for Children, the Cato Institute and the Reason Foundation.
He has even previously appeared in these pages advocating for and defending the freedom of parents to decide where to send their kids to school. It’s a simple but powerful concept that teachers unions across the country, and especially in California, despise.
He has also been a relentless critic of the educational establishment and the predominant left-wing tendencies of the educational establishment. “They’re focused more on the LGBTs than the ABCs,” he once said. “They want to indoctrinate your kids, not educate them.”
Clearly, DeAngelis hasn’t been shy in his efforts to call out the teachers unions. And sure enough, he has upset many on the hard left for this.
DeAngelis has recently been the target of efforts to embarass him for victimless actions he engaged in in his past. Namely, he participated in gay adult films 10 years ago.
Does this have any relevance to the general public? Of course not.
Is there any legitimate reason for this to be publicly aired out? No.
It’s only being amplified because DeAngelis has made something of himself and has upset an educational establishment desperate to maintain its hold on power.
DeAngelis, for his part, has put out a statement on X addressing the controversy: “As an activist for parental rights and school choice, my passion is personal. Just like everyone else, I have made mistakes throughout my life, learned from those mistakes, used that as an opportunity to grow and tried to channel that experience into something positive. I was a victim of poor decisions and poor influences. I have turned that experience into the fuel that fires me to save young people from being put in the same position I was put in and to help parents protect their children. I will never stop fighting for what is right.”
We hope DeAngelis isn’t deterred by this nonsense and continues his fight for school choice at a time when his efforts are needed the most.
