WITH summer over — not that it ever arrived to be fair — and our holiday feeling like an age ago, it was time for a wee autumn break.
But where to go? My sister-in-law lives in Huddersfield and had recommended the Titanic Spa to my hubby David and I.
A quick check of their website and we were hooked. It boasts a fantastic range of indulgent spa deals — just the very thing we were after.
We set off early morning and had a leisurely drive down to the picturesque Linthwaite Valley, where we found the Titanic Spa set among the hills of the Yorkshire Pennines right at the bottom of the valley.
The beautifully restored textile mill is steeped in historic charm but with plenty of modern luxury.
It was converted in 2005 into what was to be the UK’s first eco spa — using renewable energy systems including solar roof panels, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, recycled paper products and even vegetable ink dyes.
From the moment we arrived, we felt more than welcome. The lovely staff go out of their way to make you feel relaxed as they show you around all the facilities.
Our break included all our meals at the on-site bistro — a bright and airy restaurant with views of the outdoor hot tub and garden area.
Hungry from our lovely drive, we made a bee-line there for lunch. As you’d expect, the menu offers a variety of healthy and delicious options.
David opted for a hearty sandwich — a doorstopper if ever there was one — and I had a tasty mushroom pasta which was bellissimo.
By the time we’d finished our gorgeous apartment was ready to welcome us. Spacious and modern, it was beautifully decorated and was fully equipped with every essential we’d need — and more!
The living room was stunning but the highlight was the mezzanine floor to the bedroom which led to a balcony with views of the breathtaking countryside.
It proved the perfect place to relax before heading to the spa for our treatments.
The Titanic Spa offers a whole range of treatments to suit everyone and we’d booked the full body massages, which were sublime, then followed that with a luxurious a dip in the 15-metre swimming pool.
There’s also a fully-equipped gym for those feeling more energetic — we gave that a wide berth!

After all this was a break to rejuvenate and relax, not work up a sweat — well, apart from the Heat & Ice Experience, where you can enjoy a sauna, steam room, aromatherapy room and ice room.
Then we went for full-out ‘us’ time with the relaxation lounge, followed by a soak in the outdoor hot tub where we took in the valley views.
Before dinner we headed to Bar 1911, named after the year the Mill was built — an exclusive Champagne and Cocktail lounge where we indulged in the delicious Tropical Tease.
King prawns set off my dining odyssey, and keeping to the fishy theme, I followed it with the cod special. David opted for bread and olives to start, followed by a lovely chicken dish served with seasonal veg and Lyonnaise potatoes.
But he made sure to keep some room for the sticky toffee pudding, his fave pud. One more cocktail for the road and we were ready to head back to our luxury apartment.

Wanting to take it as easy as possible before heading home, we’d ordered the continental breakfast hamper which was waiting for us in the fridge. It was great to wake up at our leisure and have breakfast in the comfort of our own apartment.
As we set off back to Scotland, the sun made a very rare appearance. and we both agreed that even though summer had been declared Missing In Action, our trip to the Titanic Spa set us up nicely for the winter to come.
