Liverpool transfer news: Arne Slot ‘makes surprise decision’ on goalkeeper situation

Liverpool boss Arne Slot reportedly makes a surprising decision over how to handle the goalkeeping situation at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has reportedly reached a decision over how he wants to handle the goalkeeping situation at Anfield.

The Dutchman can be delighted with his opening three months of competitive action, his side sitting at the top of the Premier League table by five points.

Slot’s team also boast a 100% record in the Champions League, that feat being pulled off despite minimal activity occurring in the transfer market.

However, Slot will have multiple situations to handle over the next seven or eight months with the futures of several key players remaining uncertain.

As well as the star men that could be out of contract, the goalkeeping situation on Merseyside must be resolved with three high-quality stoppers due to be on Liverpool’s books.

Who is Slot prepared to sell?

Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher are already established as first choice and deputy ahead of Giorgi Mamardashvili arriving from Valencia in the summer.

The Georgia international has only agreed to sign for Liverpool under the impression that he will be given regular senior action.

According to TBR Football, Liverpool hold the opinion that they are open to offers for each of Alisson and Kelleher.

In the case of Kelleher, that stance comes as no surprise with the Republic of Ireland international having publicly acknowledged that he needs first-team football at this stage of his career.

Kelleher has a year less on his contract in comparison to Alisson, whose deal runs until 2027, and the Brazilian has been the undisputed number one since his arrival in 2018.

That said, as well as suffering a number of muscle injuries, there has been speculation of interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Liverpool allegedly feel that Alisson’s reputation on the global scene would attract offers that would cover the £30m that they will be spending on Mamardashvili.

Any chance of a Kelleher stay?

If Alisson were to leave Liverpool, that throws open a new scenario for Kelleher who has generally impressed across his 55 appearances for the club.

Reputation-wise, he can be considered on a par with Mamardashvili, yet Liverpool are unlikely to have shelled out such a fee for the Valencia man to spend a prolonged amount of time on the substitutes’ bench.

As a result, Kelleher is still likely to push for an Anfield exit, even if a club such as Chelsea are ready to place faith in their current options.
